Easy Dog Biscuit Recipe for Your Family Cookbook

Do you have a dog biscuit recipe in your family cookbook? After the last dog food scare, I started making homemade dog treats for my dog. Not only are they easy to make once a week, they are very economical, and I know what my dog is eating!

Do dog biscuit recipes belong in your family cookbook?

Good question! I guess it depends upon how you think of your dog.

For most of us, our dog is a member of the family. Sometimes they even spend more time inside with their human pack, than outside chasing the birds or snapping at bees.

Chances are your dog ranks high on the love scale in your family, and maybe even sleeps in a family members’ bedroom. Probably your dog gets home-cooked treats now and then, perhaps even scraps from the table.

Your dog is a faithful companion that offers recreation and amusement but also needs disciplining from time to time. Home-made dog biscuits are a great way for rewarding good behavior.

If all this sounds like your dog, then dog biscuit – and other dog food recipes – could probably have a section in the family cookbook without anyone raising an eyebrow at the notion!

Woofers easy dog treat recipe

Below is the easy recipe I use for making homemade dog biscuits. These dog treats are especially cute when made with a bone-shaped cookie cutter – although, of course, your dog doesn’t care what they look like!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup powdered milk
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 10oz. can beef or chicken broth
  • 3 tbsp. molasses
  • 3 tbsp. bacon fat
  • 1 egg beaten

Directions

Mix together dry ingredients.

Add remaining ingredients and mix well until soft dough forms. Knead thoroughly.

Roll out (or pat out) dough to a quarter-inch thick and cut with cookie cutter (or even shapes with a knife).

Prick the tops with a fork to prevent cracking and crumbling.

Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Turn off heat and leave in oven at least two hours to harden.

Don’t be surprised if your dog spends those two hours waiting for the oven door to open!

I’m betting that s/he is going to really approve of the new dog biscuit recipe section in your family cookbook.

Happy Cookbooking,

Erin

  1. Our GSD, Bear, is a “pet.” I DO make him biscuits following a recipe from the CA Humane Society I found when searching for a treat that he’d eat and wouldn’t upset his “sensitive” stomach! Other dog owners I’ve given samples to said that they were scoffed up eagerly. I will have to try your recipe; it has a few different ingredients such as the molasses/bacon. I also tweaked mine with some grated Parmesan cheese. Thanks for a possible different tasty treat!
