Top Fast Food Choices for those New Year’s Resolutions

Fast food isn’t something you have to give up to meet the objectives of your new year’s resolutions. In fact, fast food is better for you.  The natural kind of fast food, that is.

I’m talking about the kind of fast foods that are simple to eat and still satisfy your sweet tooth or savory-craving taste buds. These fast foods are always in a more natural state, and you don’t really prepare them.  In many cases, these fast foods are naturally low in fat, carbohydrates and calories (as compared to the processed fast food joint alternatives), which fit perfectly into your new year’s resolutions (you know, the ones where you promise to eat better or maybe lose weight).

Granted, you don’t need a family cookbook to know about these fast foods. I try to keep all or some of these fast foods available to munch on so I don’t get tempted to visit a fast food joint and spoil my inner balance:

SWEET TOOTH
The easiest and most healthful fast foods are fresh, sweet fruits.

Apples
All you have to do is wash an apple and bite it or slice it. How much easier can a fast food be?  Plus, apples are a healthy choice. Pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, or any single seasonal fruit fit into this category as well.  Hey, bananas come with ready-to-eat pull-down packaging!

Berries/Grapes
Washed strawberries, raspberries, blueberries. The only way to improve them is with a touch of sugar (or sugar substitute) and cream. Bunches of grapes are a great fast food, too.  Their dried counterpart, called raisins, will certainly satisfy any sweet tooth and are easily eaten (no fork required).

Oranges/Tangerines
You have to peel oranges and tangerines, so they aren’t as convenient as the aforementioned fast food, but they are natural and easily eaten, so they count.
SAVORY TOOTH
These most convenient of processed fast foods are probably in your pantry already.

Bread/Crackers
A slice of bread is a fast food. Remove from wrapper. Spread with butter, jam or Nutella. Eat. Crackers are a great fast food. The unsalted-top variety is wonderful for those whose new year’s resolutions include cutting down on salt consumption.

Nuts
If you don’t want to go back to basics by shelling your nuts, just open a can or package of nuts and eat. Many are good for you, such as almonds cashews and walnuts, according to health experts.  Nuts are nutritious and a really simple fast food snack.

Peanut butter
Unless you are allergic, who doesn’t love the fresh taste of peanut butter? Spread it on your slice of bread or on crackers, and you have a fast food that is much better than those French fries from the local fast food joint. Plus, you don’t have to go out in the cold to fetch them.

Tuna
Open the can and drain. Eat. No dressing such as mayonnaise is required to enjoy tuna as a fast food. But if you must have something on your tuna, try mustard or Italian dressing. Not as bad as you might think, and it is lower in fat and calories than using mayonnaise.  I usually buy the water-packed tuna, but oil-packed has a richer tuna taste. How you eat your tuna as fast food is a personal choice, of course.

Surely you have your own choices for fast food that are hopefully not related to fast food restaurants, granola-type candy bars, or packaged chips of all sorts found in those local corner gas stations with “too much good stuff.”

Try some basic natural fast foods for a change, and guess what, you probably won’t be hungry or even want the fare peddled at traditional fast food restaurants. Natural fast foods will help save your budget and waistline, and your face when someone asks if you’ve met your new year’s resolutions. You can even add a fast food list of your own in your family cookbook!

Happy Cookbooking Holidays, and Peace to All,
