I’m sitting here eating a slice of cake that I brought home from an event yesterday that was most appealing. There was a dedication of an old building that had been restored. The original construction date was 1904, and the theme of the event centered around the time period just after the turn of the 20th century.

There was showcase vintage dancing by professionals who recreated some of the dances of the time period — in appropriate costume. There was a recitation of all things 1904 (thanks to the Internet). There was hoopla and hurrahs, unveiling of plaques and celebration.

And, there was Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Icing and Peanut Butter Fluff Filling.

Oh my. The Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Icing and Peanut Butter Fluff Filling was made by the local “Ace of Cakes.” There was an architectural centerpiece cake replicating the building that no one realized was cake; it was so precise and beautiful. The baker had made smaller sheet cakes of Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Icing and Peanut Butter Fluff Filling to serve the masses. I don’t know what will happen to the main cake; maybe they’ll petrify it and put it on display too.

One of the event organizers told me they commissioned the Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Icing and Peanut Butter Fluff Filling because it represented some popular foods of the time. Apparently in 1904 Devil’s food cake was all the rage and peanut butter was just becoming popular.

All I know is that this Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Icing and Peanut Butter Fluff Filling should be renamed “Divine.” I confess I ate a slice at the event; everyone was talking about it. Not too sweet, full of fresh flavor, light and decadently satisfying. Absolutely perfect as cakes go.

So I managed to slip home a second piece. It wasn’t hard. There was twice as much cake as attendees, so the event organizers were being openly generous. I might just wander back in a day or two to see if there are any additional leftovers (I’d love to see what the main cake looks like with a slice removed).

Devil’s Food Cake with Chocolate Icing and Peanut Butter Fluff Filling was a fitting end to the event. While I never like to use the expression “To Die For,” it was certainly a delicious way to end a festive celebration. If I get the recipe, I’ll let you know.
