Although we generally think of Memorial Day as a wonderful three-day family weekend that kicks off the summer season of outdoor dining and sun-kissed activities, in reality, Memorial Day is not about the barbecue.
Memorial Day isn’t about whether the grill will be charcoal or propane; whether the meat will be hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, or bratwurst, or steak. It isn’t about the potato salad, fruit salad, or even what dressing will be on the tossed salad. Or, even if dessert will be strawberry shortcake, apple pie, ice cream, or chocolate chip cookies.
Memorial Day is about remembering those who died to give us the ability, the freedom, to choose all these things. We may not agree about what to serve for our Memorial Day barbecue, but surely we agree that having the freedom of choice is a precious legacy to cherish and protect.
So, on Monday, May 25, 2009 at 3 p.m., where ever you are and what ever you are doing, join in the National Moment of Remembrance. Please stop and spend 60 seconds to remember those who’ve died defending our freedom to have a Memorial Day barbecue, or attend a baseball game, or watch television, or make a family cookbook.
Set your cell phone alarm, watch alarm, computer alarm, alarm clock, or any other device available to remind you. The men and women of our Armed Forces surely deserve our attention and respect for at least one minute. But, of course, we all do have the freedom to choose…
Mayo, ketchup, or mustard on that ‘burger?
