That’s right. Wednesday night is possum night at our house.
Now, all you city folks needn’t get excited. Nor you country folks, either.
I’m sure some of you read the recent article online about stretching your food budgets by hunting and eating the local wildlife.
Wednesday night is possum night at our house means that the little critter comes to eat at our house, like clockwork, every Wednesday about midnight. S/he is a dinner guest and not on the menu (unlike so many M&Ms on the telly).
“Possie” comes to eat cat food on Wednesday nights. We put out a goodly scoop of cat food to help nourish about 6 feral cats that have adopted our yard. (Note that we have taken responsibility for all the feral cats by humanely trapping them and having all the feral cats fixed.)
We’ve seen Possie share the feral cat food, with the cats paying her no mind as they eat peacefully side-by-side.
I’ve been told we could catch and relocate Possie, but that might hasten her demise as opossums are quite territorial and have limited eyesight. Their life in the wild is not kind, and I could never bring myself to dine on such a creature. It’s all I could do to eat a carrot I grew that reminded me of Bart Simpson.
So, fear not. There will be no opossum recipes in my family cookbook, or recipes for squirrel and other local wildlife. And I do hope there aren’t any such recipes in your family cookbook either.
Happy cookbooking,
Matilda
