My favorite chocolate cherry cake bars are the best chocolate cherry dessert treat you can make for St. Valentine’s Day. No kidding. I have yet to get a complaint from anyone eating this richly flavorful chocolate cherry dessert treat.
Although this recipe for chocolate cherry cake bars is contained within my Matilda’s Fantastic Cookbook Software, I thought I would offer it here on my blog to those of you who haven’t seen all my wonderful recipes that come with the cookbook software. (You always have the option to delete any or all of my recipes, of course, but that would really hurt my feelings…sob!)
Anyway, if you want to impress, serve these delicious chocolate cherry cake bars to whomever is your heart’s desire:
Best Chocolate Cherry Cake Bars
Chocolate Cherry Cake – Base:
1 package devil’s food cake mix
21oz can cherry pie fruit filling
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 eggs, beaten
Chocolate Cherry Cake – Glaze:
1 cup sugar
5 tablespoon margarine or butter
1/3 cup milk
1 cup (8 oz) chocolate chip morsels (any variety of semi-sweet, white chocolate, milk chocolate, swirled chocolate)
Whipping cream (or Cool Whip)
Maraschino cherries (preferably with stems)
Mint leaves
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare package cake with chocolate cherry cake base ingredients. Grease and flour a 9 x 13 baking pan and add chocolate cherry cake batter. Bake for 20-30 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. When the chocolate cherry cake is done and cooled slightly, make the glaze.
In a small saucepan, combine sugar, butter and milk. Bring to boil and stir at boiling for one minute to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips until mixture is smooth. Pour glaze over warm chocolate cherry cake. When cooled, cut into bars and serve garnished with whipped cream, a maraschino cherry and mint leaf.
I served these chocolate cherry cake bars once for a St. Valentine’s Day dinner, and one of my dinner guests ate five bars! He was so compelled by the taste that I knew it was a winner to include in my family cookbook and my cookbook software. How could it miss, since the recipe contains the most delicious ingredient ever created — chocolate?
Happy cookbooking,
Matilda
