I once won a Scrabble® contest using the word Quince. My Scrabble opponent was one of those smarty-pants, know-everything types who smirked whenever he scored points.
I was ready for his challenge of quince, though. I knew that “my” word quince was valid because I had seen it as one of the 31-Flavors. As it turned out, he didn’t challenge the word. Darn, I had so looked forward to proving I was right for once.
Well, those days are faint memories, so today we are going to challenge my readers and cookbook software users to come up with their most creative original recipe using quince. We know quince is popular as a jelly or jam; that it can be used in tarts and stews; and that the apple of Adam’s and Eve’s temptation could have been a quince instead (it apparently is an ancient fruit).
Although it looks like a bumpy pear, the quince is actually a member of the rose family. It has an intense perfume-like fragrance when ripe, which is generally right about now (early fall through January).
So, put on your thinking caps and come up with a crazy new recipe for quince that we can all enjoy. The deadline to submit entries for the Quince Essential Challenge is September 30. Our judges will be our staff, so to impress you must be really creative!
How to Enter the Quince Essential Challenge
Post your most creative original quince recipe using the “comments” section of this entry (see link below). Your recipe can be a main course, cookie, or whatever, just as long as it is creative and original. On Friday, October 3, 2008, we’ll announce the most creative original recipe as our Quince Essential Challenge winner.
Prize for the Quince Essential Challenge Winner
Winner of the Quince Essential Challenge will receive a $50 check from The Cookbook People. Plus there is fame, glory, and a second prize of an Easy Bind Kit to the runner-up.
Fine print
The Cookbook People assume any recipe submitted to the Quince Essential Challenge is the property of the submitting party/recipe owner. The Cookbook People also assumes authorization from said recipe owner to include the Quince Essential Challenge entry recipe in future editions of Matilda’s Fantastic Cookbook Software.
