My dear friend Ruth has a way of irritating me like no other person can. I’m always the uptight one, but in contrast she is so mellow that she doesn’t even mind if I talk about her to strangers on the Web. That’s probably why we get along; the yin and yang of our 50-year friendship.
But now I think Ruth has overstepped my limits. She has volunteered me to make a family cookbook using my cookbook software for someone she met while waiting for her Fluffy at the dog groomers. Can you imagine that?
Never mind that I’m supposed to be writing another family cookbook of my own in time for Christmas (and it’s September already!). Or that I’m supposed to be actually selling my cookbook software. So here she goes and volunteers my time for a freebie!
“What on Earth did you go and do that for?” I glared at her with my most piercing look of disdain.
“Well, Matilda, when the weather gets cooler you won’t be rollerblading quite so much,” Ruth replied, with a little sarcastic grin. “Besides, you need a project to keep your mind off those silly cookbook software sales numbers.
“You can use your recipe book software thingy, and those cookbook templates and make that family cookbook in no time.”
“You know perfectly well I gave up rollerblading years ago,” I corrected. “And who is this person who needs a family cookbook anyway?”
“No one special. Just an older lady whose grandchildren are coming to visit at Christmas. She doesn’t have enough money to buy them nice presents, so she thought her gift could be spending time cooking with them, and making a family cookbook.”
“Oh.”
“Well, she has money enough to get her dog shampooed.” I countered, feeling myself starting to weaken a bit.
“It was a little stray Chihuahua she felt sorry for,” Ruth replied. “She may keep it if she can’t find the owner.”
“Oh.”
“I guess I could make a family cookbook for her using my cookbook software. The cookbook template is so easy to use, it might not take me that much time, really.”
Ruth nodded as she gave me the phone number, her soft brown eyes smiling in triumph.
After all, any dog friend is a friend of mine, too, I reasoned. And Ruth’s.
